Karalakattai is a traditional Indian club made of wood that is used for developing arm strength, shoulder flexibility, core stability and body coordination. For making Karalakattai, it should not be made using newly cut wood because of higher water content in fresh wood. It takes minimum 6 months to dry completely. Likewise, if we use new wood, we will not be able to attain desired weight and shape. And also, it will lose its tendency in future. On the other hand, choosing the right pillar without corrosion or internal damage is a crucial process. This is the part where we get Unique from everyone, because we procure pillars in Bulk from the dealer which will contain both good and damaged pillars. Becuase, when we choose wood by ourself it will cost more. Hence dealers will not allow that. Many karalakattai makers use this method and compromise on the quality of their products.
But we, Karala Yoga buys selective Pillars from the dealer which causes minor loss to them at times. Hence, we find our rates reasonable to cover every aspect.
Purchased pillars contains various kinds of woods. Some specified woods will not be available at all times for which we may have to wait for 2 months. After all these processes, Pillars will be handed over to our Carpenter for storing safely.
Our order confirmation process depends on the availability of wood. We precise the Height and weight of the Karalakattai depends on the practitioner skill level and their goal. Also, we customize our products according to the customer's preferences on height, weight and design.
And the next step is to shape the pillar into a Karalakattai using a lathe machine. It takes us one day to make a product. The carpenter has to be careful not to damage the wood or make any cracks while carving the Karalakattai. during the process is that the pillar can break easily if we apply too much pressure. This causes us to lose some materials and time. We ensure that we meet the customer's exact requirements by checking the accuracy at every stage. We achieve the desired height and weight by carving the wood carefully. After getting the right shape, we spend one day to give a proper finishing to the product.
The final step is to polish the Karalakattai to give it a smooth and shiny finish. We use two methods to finish our products based on the type of wood and the customer's feedback.
The first method is to wait for a day after making a Karalakattai before applying any finishings. This is because some woods may develop cracks or break spontaneously after being carved. If there are no issues, we use natural bees wax mixing with coconut oil to coat the surface of the product. This gives our Karalakattai’s a bright and natural shine. We do not use any artificial stainer or paints.
The second method is used for some woods that have a white or pale appearance that some customers may not like. In such cases, we use natural colors extracted from other woods using oil and apply them to our products. This process enhances the color of the wood without compromising its quality. However, this method is more difficult and time-consuming, and we only use it upon specific request from the customer. These are the two methods we use to finish our products with excellence and care.
The final product is a beautiful and unique karalakattai that is ready to be used and shipped worldwide for various purpose to our students and customers to improve their shoulder strength and flexibility, grip and forearm strength, core strength, body coordination, cardiovascular exercise, and martial arts skills.
